Sarah Greene is passionate about effective communication and collaboration. Making research as easy, expedient, and engaging as possible—for both study participants and research scientists—is the primary focus of her work.
Since joining Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) in 1998, Ms. Greene has excelled at finding new ways to streamline the conduct of research, especially the research review process. As a key member of several large collaborative projects conducted by the HMO Research Network, she has identified strategies that support successful collaboration and ease the burden of multi-site research review. Her decade of work with the HMO Cancer Research Network (CRN) compelled her to examine how multi-site research review can be improved, and she also co-led the development of an alternative model for collaborative Institutional Review Board (IRB) review of data-only studies. Her ongoing involvement in the CRN is in the areas of cancer survivorship and optimizing clinical trial recruitment.
Many of Ms. Greene's current projects examine health communication and how it influences behavior, including the role of health literacy (written and oral) in cancer prevention. She is also exploring ways to apply social marketing strategies to improve research-related communication. Her goal is to find ways to ensure that research design, implementation, and dissemination are all participant centered, which will further inform a conceptual model of engagement. In addition, she continues to study strategies for facilitating the research process, from streamlining research review to promoting successful collaboration.
