Research interests and experience

Onchee Yu's work as a biostatistician is aimed at issues that have a large public health impact. Her extensive experience in statistical application ranges from breast cancer screening and prevention to pharmaco-epidemiology to vaccine safety and effectiveness.

Ms. Yu has been a key member of GHRI's immunization research program for nearly a decade. During her nine years with the Vaccine Safety Datalink, she has contributed to several important projects focused on accurately measuring vaccine effectiveness, including 2003 findings suggesting that the pneumococcal vaccine didn't reduce pneumonia risk in the elderly. Her work also includes studies of childhood immunizations, such as a 2006 study that showed common over-the-counter pain relievers didn't prevent minor skin reactions to the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTaP) vaccine.

Ms. Yu's more recent research combines her interest in medication use and cancer risk. Collaborating with GHRI investigator Denise Boudreau, PhD, and colleagues, she evaluated the impact of statin use on various cancers, including breast cancer and reproductive organs cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.

Ms. Yu is a member of the American Statistical Association. Her methodological expertise includes case-cohort analysis and survival analysis. Working with GHRI investigator Jennifer Nelson, PhD, she is also beginning to explore residual confounding bias in observational studies, with particular focus on studies of influenza vaccine effectiveness in the elderly.
