Preventive medicine

Group Health clinicians are devoted to preventing diseases and injuries, as well as detecting and treating them. Accordingly, much of the research conducted at Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) concerns preventive medicine, also known as preventive care. Preventive medicine research includes investigations of surveillance systems, screening tests to detect disease before symptoms appear, and health promotion in clinical settings.

This research is centered in the Group Health Department of Preventive Care (DPC). GHRI Senior Investigator David C. Grossman, MD, MPH, is the medical director of preventive care for Group Health. A subspecialty group in Group Health's medical staff, the DPC collaborates with GHRI, the medical staff, and Group Health's Strategic Services and Quality team. Together, these Group Health physician-scientists innovate and conduct research related to the design, promotion, delivery, and evaluation of preventive care and health promotion services.

Most GHRI research areas touch on the prevention of illness and injury in some way, usually considering whole populations. The ones that involve preventive medicine at the level of the individual patient include aging, behavior change, cancer control, injury prevention, cardiovascular health, child and adolescent health, chronic illness, immunization and infectious diseases, obesity, and women's health.
