The Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) Pathology Library manages the use of diagnostic slides and specimens from Group Health clinical services for research purposes. This unique resource consists of pathology specimens dating back to 1992. Group Health and collaborating researchers have used this resource to study cancers of the breast, ovary, prostate, skin, colon, and more since the program began in 2008.
Specimens are released only in cases where patient consent and HIPAA requirements have been met. GHRI staff members protect patient confidentiality by following Group Health's standard policies and procedures for handling patient information. Pathology Library staff use rigorous quality assurance protocols on each project by reviewing study procedures and closely monitoring data collection, electronic and physical data storage, and specimen delivery and return.
The staff’s highest priority is to preserve specimens for any potential future clinical need. Even with patient consent, research is not always permitted. Vigorous guidelines are followed to ensure preservation of pathology specimens, particularly those less than 10 years old.
