Annual program highlights research that improves health

Each year, Group Health Research Institute and the Group Health Foundation host a lecture to honor Hilde and Bill Birnbaum, founding members of Group Health who were passionate about their cooperative and its power to improve patient care through research. 

2016 speaker: Dr. Leana Wen

Baltimore Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen will deliver Group Health’s 2016 Birnbaum Lecture

From gun violence to chronic illness, Dr. Wen believes many health problems can be solved by addressing their social causes.

This year, we present Dr. Leana Wen, nationally acclaimed TED speaker and health commissioner for the city of Baltimore. She is professor of emergency medicine and health policy at George Washington University.

Featured in an NPR series and other media for creative approaches to tough public health problems like heroin addiction and disparities in care, Dr. Wen inspires individuals and communities to take a fresh look at improving health and health care for all. She is also author of the best-selling book, When Doctors Don’t Listen: How to Avoid Misdiagnoses and Unnecessary Tests.

Dr. Wen's keynote address at the 17th Annual Hilde and Bill Birnbaum Endowed Lecture will be "A shared vision: New perspectives on strengthening social determinants of health."

Dr. Wen received her medical training from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Brigham & Women’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where she was a Clinical Fellow at Harvard Medical School. A Rhodes Scholar, she studied public health and health policy at the University of Oxford, and worked as a community organizer in Los Angeles and St. Louis.

Appointed Baltimore City Health Commissioner in 2015, she is earning national acclaim for her bold tactics—ranging from a citywide opioid-overdose prevention and response plan to a biweekly town hall and podcast on eliminating health disparities.
